Leek & District League leaders Blue
Mugge are on track to create history and become the first Leek club
to win the Staffs Premier Sunday Cup after Kenny Scragg's side secured
their place in the final with a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Bignall
End.
Claiming a spot in the final of the
county's most prestigious Sunday league's competition is already a
notable first for Mugge, but Scragg claims his side will not be content
to pick up runners-up medals.
"We have never won this competition before
and our aim is to bring the trophy back to Leek," he insisted. "It's a
great opportunity for us all and I know that all the lads will be up for
it."
Mugge
will take on Coors League high-fliers Chell Heath Knave in the Cup final
showdown, and Scragg concedes that the Coors side pose a considerable
threat.
He said: "It will be a very difficult
game, they will be full of confidence due to their current cup run and
league form. The final should be an entertaining encounter, with two
good sides looking to take the trophy home. But as I've said before, the
harder the game the better we play."
Chell Heath Knave continued their
season-long unbeaten run when they comfortably beat Holmcroft North End
3-0 in their semi-final.
The competition is for the elite Sunday
teams in the county, so a youthful Chell Heath still have a huge hurdle
to overcome if they are to take the crown when they take on Blue Mugge.
However, joint-manager and striker Chris Wood is optimistic they can
bring the cup back to Chell Heath.
"We've done well because it's only a small
place, but it would be great if we can keep the cup here," he said,
referring to rivals Knave of Clubs, who use the same pub and who won the
competition last year.
Nerves were a problem in the opening
stages of the semi-final, but they settled down after Wood fired them in
front moments before half-time.
Gareth Tweats added a second on the hour
before Martin Hughes struck on 70 to wrap up victory and earn a place in
the final on March 18th.
The match will be a special one for Chell
Heath striker Adam Sawyer, who played for Blue Mugge last
season, and it will also be the biggest that Chell Heath and joint
managers Wood and Shaun Fraser have taken part in since the club was
formed six years ago. |
